Kaanapali Kai (South Course) opened in 1976, but recently completed an extensive renovation by architect Robin Nelson, making it once again fit for world-class play. Recommended accommodations for proximity: The Kapalua Villas.
The 6,700-yard, par-71 Royal Kaanapali (North Course), designed by the renowned Robert Trent Jones Sr., first opened in 1962, and is one of two Trent-designed courses in Hawaii. It is located among the foothills of the West Maui Mountains, about 15 minutes north of the town of Lahaina and just a short walk to the famous Blackrock snorkeling site. The course plays beautifully, the terrain, which ranges from sea level to several hundred feet, provides stunning, sweeping views of the island and of the many hotels that dot the coast.

The par-72, 6,600-yard layout designed by Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane, is tropical in atmosphere and friendly to all levels of play. Winding through palms and hibiscus, this course rolls gently to the sea - with all putts breaking to the neighbor island of Molokai shimmering on the horizon. On a lava peninsula that carves two pristine bays, Hole #4 has ocean breezes and uninterrupted views of the coast. The Bay Course signature Hole #5 asks you to carry over sparkling Oneloa Bay to a small green protected by sand traps.

Kapalua - Plantation ($$$)

The par-73, 7,263-yard Plantation Course is the course of the champions, site of the PGA TOUR season-opening Mercedes Championships each January. This elite field of previous year's PGA winners includes such golf greats as David Duval, Tiger Woods, Justin Leonard, and Ernie Els and creates an excitement that is unparalleled. The grand scale of the course designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore unfurls across natural geographic formations and pineapple plantation fields that take your breath away.

Makena - North ($$$)

Recommended accommodations for proximity: Maui Prince Hotel
Opened in 1993, the North Course goes out of its way to make golfers feel at one with their natural surroundings. There are no distractions on this course-unless you considered the unobstructed views of the blue Pacific, neighboring islands, and humpback whales breaching during whale season to be a bit distracting. In fact, to make it feel more like a nature walk and less like a golf course, even cart paths on the North Course are tucked away and hidden from view.
Slope = 139 / ****
