The generous fairways are tree-lined, winding through the pine savannah, and leading up to large, undulating greens averaging 12,000 square feet and playing very fast. Water comes into play on 8 holes and there are 72 bunkers to thwart approach shots. Shell Landing features a complete 25-acre practice facility, clubhouse and deck, and locker rooms.

The Bridges Golf Club at Hollywood Casino ($$)
_

 Select
Arnold Palmer set the stage for carving 14 acres of wetlands into what Golf Digest and Casino Player rate as the best course on Mississippi's Gulf Coast. You have four sets of tees to choose from, and a word to the wise: Please choose carefully. On almost every shot, you're surrounded by water or wetlands. Hence the need for all these bridges - 21 to be exact. If you play from one of the three forward tees, you'll have the benefit of large, generous landing areas. But play from the King's tees and you'd better be prepared for heroic carries over deep Scottish-style bunkers and briny marshlands.

The Oaks ($$)
_

 Select
As if the name doesn't already say it, 18 lush fairways wind their way around massive, ancient oak trees - with a few skyscraper pines mixed in. Carved through timberlands and around natural wetlands, The Oaks offers golfers a unique experience. Plenty of blind tee shots, sharp dog legs and undulating fairways. In fact, Dr. Gil Morgan, Senior PGA Champion, says "it's a must-play on the Mississippi Gulf Coast." It's a very playable course for all handicaps, but challenging enough to host more professional tournaments than any other course on The Coast.

Play where the pros play. But you don't necessarily have to play like the pros. This Mark McCumber-designed course rewards the smart golfer. So think before you shoot. Because the beautiful rolling fairways are tight. And when you watch your ball flirt with the edge, they look a whole lot tighter. Once you're on the green there's lots of green to go around. They're on the large side, but the undulations will keep you thinking. Again, the smart golfer gets the par. Or birdie, if you're lucky.
